A Woodworking Career - Overview

Woodworking is a vast field, and a career in woodworking can mean many things. Generally, the majority of woodworkers would fall into the category of cabinetmakers. Cabinetmakers are in demand due to housing construction and renovations. Furniture makers also form a large part of the woodworking industry.

Being a trained woodworker means that you have a skill that is usable in every area of the country, or world for that matter. The demand for wood products will never disappear, despite all the new man made materials entering the market.

Having the knowledge and concrete skill of woodworking will make you feel proud. You will be able to look at furniture, cabinetry, and other wood products and take delight that you can figure out how they are made. I am constantly poking my head under desks and inside cabinets to see how other woodworkers build their work.

Ultimately, if you are serious about woodworking and wish to make it a career choice, you probably will have a goal of becoming the owner of a woodworking company. Part of the joy of being a woodworker, probably what attracted you to woodworking in the first place is that you would like to build nice furniture, cabinets, instruments etc.

As an employee, you will rarely get the chance to build what you would like to build. As the owner of a business, you will have more say as to what projects you will work on. There are other reasons to eventually become a woodworking business owner, whether it be self employed or a company with employees that I will discuss about further in the article.

If you are reading this, then I don't think I have to sell you on the positives of woodworking. With that in mind I have to tell you that a woodworking career can be a difficult one however. There are many downsides that must be taken into account before you get into this line of work. I do not mean to discourage you, I am just presenting the truths of the matter in a realistic way. I encourage you to read and think thoughtfully about how all the negatives of becoming a woodworker will affect your life.

Ok, it may not be as tough as I am making it out to be, but I just want to open your eyes to the realities. Not all woodworkng shops are created equal, and some will have very good conditions by industry standards, and some won't. My personal advice is not to tolerate dangerous working conditions under any circumstance.

Ultimately, if you are willing to endure the environment of a woodworking shop, it is because you love to work with wood. Be happy that you have found a profession that gives you pride in what you do.

As I mentioned, calling yourself a woodworker can mean a whole wide range of thngs. I have focused on cabinetmakers, since cabinetmakers are the highest percentage of woodworkers. However, there are many subsections of woodworking that you may be interested in.
