Woodworking First Aid

Every woodworking shop should have a first-aid kit, that's a given. First aid kits can be purchased for under $25, or you can put them together yourself. Most of the items will be extreme emergency use only.

One thing for sure is to keep it well stocked with bandaids of various sizes. It is the most used item in the first aid kiy, and they always get used up quickly.

Make sure the first aid kit box is easily accessible, usually mounted on a wall is the best option. Do not block it by placing cabinets and sheetgoods that prevent you from accessing it in times of an emergency. A good idea is to mount a mirror near to where the first aid kit is.

If you have a fridge/freezer in the area of the workshop, it is also a good idea to keep a bag of ice handy. If the unthinkable happens and a piece of yourself gets cuts off, this is your best best to be able to preserve that piece in order to re-attach it.

Here is a list of essential items:

  • Band Aids
  • Bandages
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Gauze
  • Antiseptic wipes/ointment
  • Aspirin/pain relievers
  • Vinyl gloves
  • Instant cold pack
  • Tape
